Shore Based Courses 2007-8

The Cruising Club has now become an RYA training centre and we have arranged the following courses. Please be advised that due to the good value there is a huge demand for these courses and there are limited places so it is advisable to book early. DETAILS

1. RYA DAYSKIPPER - THEORY

a) Course Dates – 4 Weekends (Sat/Sun) 13 + 14 October, 20 + 21 October, 27 + 28 October, 3 + 4 November 2007.

b) Cost - £180.00 based on minimum 6 students, cost will reduce if more than 6 enrol, maximum 10, the fee includes the provision of individual student packs and practice navigation tables. Note : Plas Menai Cost = £225.00

c) Course Instructor – Mr. Tony Mead

d) Students to provide – Drawing instruments i.e. parallel rule or plotter, dividers, compasses, pencils (2b), sharpener, rubber and notepaper/book.

e) Lunch etc – The Club Steward will make arrangements for students to order sandwiches etc. Tea/coffee available.

f) Outline of Course – 8 days instruction spread over 4 Weekend Saturdays and Sundays. Hours 0900 – 1630 daily with 1 hour lunch-break.

The course is designed to cover all the theory needed to navigate a yacht safely in less demanding situations. It is an ideal starting point for crew members, wives and partners who do not normally sail or navigate. The course is both interesting and enjoyable.


2. RYA COASTAL SKIPPER/YACHTMASTER OFFSHORE


a) Course Dates – 4 Weekends (Sat/Sun) 12/13 Jan, 19/20 Jan, 26/27 Jan and 2/3 Feb 2008.

b) Cost £180.00 based on minimum 6 students. Cost will reduce if more than 6 enrol, maximum 10. The fee includes the provision of individual student packs and practice navigation tables. Note : Plas Menai Cost - £280.00

f) Outline of Course – 8 days instruction spread over 4 Weekend Saturdays and Sundays. Hours 0900 – 1630 with 1 hour lunch break. The course is a more advanced study of navigation and meteorology designed to cope with the more complex elements of making offshore passages and piloting a yacht safely using the weather to best advantage. The course is interesting, enjoyable and achievable. Students should either have already completed the RYA Dayskipper theory course or have good prior yachting experience. A sound knowledge is required of the International Regulations For The Prevention Of Collision At Sea and VHF operating procedures.


3. RYA DIESEL ENGINE

a) Course Dates (1 Day Course) – 8 March 2008.

b) Cost £65 based on 6 students minimum. Cost will reduce if more than 6 enrol maximum 10. Note : Plas Menai Cost £95

c) Course Instructor – Barry Tuson

d) Lunch etc – The Club Steward will make arrangements for students to order sandwiches etc. Tea/coffee provided.

e) Course Outline – 1 day course 0900 – 1700 with 1 hour lunch break. The course is essential for yacht owners who do not know what makes their engine tick. It looks at how it works, fuel injectors and filters, water pumps and trouble shooting when the engine will not work. Practical “hands on” an engine is part of the training.


4. RYA VHF SHORT RANGE CERTIFICATE

a) Course Dates (Three 1 day courses) – 17th November 2007, 1st of March 2008.

b) Cost - £70.00 based on minimum 6 students. Cost will reduce if more than 6 enrol. Maximum 10. The cost includes the required £20 licence/exam fee.

c) Course Instructor – Phil Capper

d) Lunch etc – The Club Steward will make arrangements for students to order sandwiches etc. Tea/Coffee available.

e) Course Outline – 1 Day Course 0900 – 1700 with 1 hour lunch break. The course covers all aspects of operating VHF Radios effectively including the Global Maritime Distress Safety System and Digital Selective Calling. Successful completion of the course results in the issue of a VHF operators license. Students must know the phonetic alphabet prior to the course start and bring a passport photograph with them.

5. RYA FIRST AID

a) a) Course Dates (1 Day Course) – 16 February 2008

b) Cost - £50.00 based on minimum of 6 students. Cost will reduce if more than 6 enrol. Maximum 10. Note : Plas Menai Cost £70

c) Course Instructor – To be arranged.

d) Lunch etc – The Club Steward will make arrangements for students to order sandwiches etc. Tea/Coffee available.

e) Course Outline – 1 Day Course 0900 – 1700 with 1 hour lunch break. The course provides the basic information needed to deal with emergencies in a watersports environment. Sessions include dealing with personal safety, resuscitation, bleeding, broken bones and casualty management. Some practical scenarios will be covered.


6. BOOKING COURSES

a) The Club obviously need to know in advance who is going to enrol in courses. For this reason members are requested to complete a booking form asap and forwarded it to the Club FAO The Secretary. Payment of the required course fee should also be made to the secretary 14 days in advance of the relevant course start date.

b) If it is necessary to for any reason cancel any course all fees paid will be refunded in full.

7. OTHER COURSES

It is possible for the Club to arrange other RYA Training to meet Member’s requirements. In particular Yachtmaster Ocean Theory, Radar and Sea Survival Courses can be arranged dependant on demand. Please contact Tony Mead (Sailing Captain) if you wish to undertake these courses or indeed any other.
